Do you think life is just a big wheel the two of us are all running on isn’t it? The weeks keep spinning by and the years keep passing by.

We are like cars flying by on the highway.

I can see how much time has passed when I am gone for a long time overseas and then come back to the states. It’s almost like I was frozen in time and then thawed out a few years later to see all of the swings, this is how it felt when I was gone for a few years at a time. My Heating plus A/C repairman has put on some pounds, and his babies are now in school, and a few friends and family have passed away since I’ve been absent. My Heating plus A/C plan needs a tune up as I haven’t done anything to it since I’ve been absent and the people renting just change the HEPA filter and that’s about it as far as repair with the HVAC unit. I suppose the whole goal in life is to just have fun and prefer the ride. I have a new job at the local library helping organize the books and stock the shelves, however as far as job goes that is about all I do nowadays. The rest of my free time is spent doing the fun things that bring me joy and freedom prefer playing beach basketball, hanging out with friends, and drumming with my band. I still do some Heating plus A/C repairs around town when someone needs help, however other than that I don’t have any pipe dreams of becoming “rich” because I already am.

Both of us run our cooling system a lot during the summer season in our beach house although I have noticed that our ppm meter shows that our air quality is still not that great. I bet the two of us need some kind of additional air purification system to help clean the air more completely, although I entirely have no plans for which kind to get as there are so more than 2 unusual kinds on the market. I will have to conduct some field research to find which brands are the best before deciding to buy 1. There is a new company in our town which sells them too so I may just shoot down there this week and talk to the techs there. I suppose they are a newer company and I am sure they have superb prices to keep up with the intense competition in the area. I just want to have clean air in my beach house so that I don’t have to suffer from my dust pollen irritations anymore. I want to get a better plan with a HEPA filter in it so I need to make sure about that before buying the plan or I will have to shell out a lot more cash for a HEPA afterwards. I set aside some cash for things such as this, so it won’t kill me to spend some cash on making the air quality better in our house. Also, my associate Bob is an Heating plus A/C rep and I can ask him if he knows anything about the air purification systems currently on the market.

I need to start to practice my drumming skills because I am going back to my flat overseas and my bandmate Lou is going to want to play music with me as soon as I land. Both of us play music on the paseo right on the beachfront and have so much fun doing so. Both of us also play live music in bars and clubs occasionally for some quick cash although I would rather play my music outside so I can embrace nature and interact with the people walking by. There is no air conditioning system in a lot of these clubs too, which makes it uncomfortable in the summer season to play inside. A lot of clubs don’t prefer to use their weather conditions control systems because they are afraid of how much it will cost them. There are a lot of terrible people in my town overseas, which makes it less of a mouse race than here in the states, however the two of us don’t have all of the creature comforts that they have in the states. Both of us do have 1 club where the two of us play that enjoys to keep the locale nice and cool in the summer season so the two of us usually enjoy playing there when the two of us want to get out of the summer season heat and humidity on the streets. In the Winter season a lot of the sites have small space heaters, usually old gas heaters, so playing inside is nice because it can get quite frosty outside. I can’t wait to go back home, although I am also trying to prefer my time here while I am visiting my friends and family. Life is so superb and I am thankful for it.

So I had the best spring that I can even remember

We learned all about indoor air quality when we first started hunkering down inside the HVAC comfort of home during the pandemic. I wanted to learn all I could to improve our immune strength in order to fight off the worst of the effects from Covid. That’s when we were first introduced to the whole home air purification system. It’s different from other air purifiers. Most air purifiers are mobil and get moved from room to room. They also have filters that have to be cleaned as well. The whole home air purification system actually works in conjunction with the HVAC equipment. This type of air purifier doesn’t need a filter since it uses UV light to destroy the DNA of all the airborne contaminants in the house. It’s an awesome system but it was out of my league expense wise. We had to save up for something like that. So we changed to a HEPA air filter to start. But this winter, we finally had enough to add the whole home air purification system to our HVAC unit. It transformed our air literally overnight. However, I wasn’t expecting what happened in the spring. The air purifier made the inside of my house a refuge from pollen and my seasonal allergies. The pollen in the air also got zapped with the UV light. So I had the best spring that I can even remember. Normally, I really struggle with seasonal allergies in the spring particularly. But this spring, I walked into a wonderfully allergy free zone in my home thanks to the whole home air purification system.

It’s time for the heat and humidity of summer again.

As much as I’d like to skip the next four months, that’s just not how it works.

Living in this region is just wonderful for 8 months of the year. Summer is the trade off and it comes with plenty of HVAC cooling. This time each year was just painful for me because I knew the air conditioning was going to really get going. That meant that the price of all that air conditioning would just continue to go up. And that’s what sort of adds insult to injury when it comes to dealing with the heat. Not only do I have to sweat it out for four months, I have had to pay a bunch of money for the privilege. Not this year. For once, I’m ready for the summer. I called the HVAC professionals in the spring to get the air conditioning tune-up done early. We also cut down on the amount of HVAC cooling this spring. I started out with putting the thermostat in the upper 70’s for the afternoon. This way, we got a bit more accustomed to the house being warmer during the day. I also sealed up the house to maximize the efficiency of the heat pump. We now have solar shades to stop the direct sunlight heating as well. But it’s the thermostat setting that’s going to really make the difference. For the summer, I’m setting the thermostat at 82 during the day. And at night, we’ll bring it down to 75 for a cool nights sleep.

When we bought this house, we wanted to restore it to its original design.

That plan came with a lot of renovation to take it back to what it once was.

This house was designed by a famous architect back in the 20’s. It’s built so well that the structure was the least of our worries. But the fact was that the house was designed before residential HVAC was readily available. That meant that we had to start over. The previous owner had sort of created a bit of hodge podge when it came to heating and cooling. There were window air conditioners and space heaters throughout the house. The region we live in doesn’t need much HVAC heating so I understood the space heaters. But the window air conditioners weren’t enough so someone put in a really basic central air conditioning unit. I’m sure it provided more HVAC cooling that the window units but it was an absolute eyesore. So that had to come out. The HVAC contractor we used is awesome and he was just so careful and meticulous with how he removed that old central air conditioning. But he was just so incredible when he replaced that air conditioning with a ductless multi split system. Those ductless heat pumps are placed perfectly. They are set up high on exterior walls and run perfectly with the lines of the rest of the place. And HVAC cooling we get from the ductless heat pumps is just simply outstanding. I’m really amazed that we get this sort of premium quality heating and air from such a small piece of heating and cooling equipment.

The pandemic really did test us.

Not only did we have to work from home in the air conditioning of our house instead of the zone controlled HVAC of the office, we took pay cuts.

That was the only way we could both stay employed. And even then it was close. Thankfully, we were able to work from home in our own air conditioning and keep our jobs. But that was just the beginning. We had to figure out just how we were going to deal with so much less income. Our budget was already pretty tight prior to the pay cuts. So we had to make some big choices. The spending, at the beginning, had to be just on essentials. And if we wanted something other that that, it had to fit the budget and it had to be on sale. Then, we targeted the air conditioning costs for savings that first summer. Instead of just putting the thermostat setting wherever we wanted, we moved it to the low 80’s during the day. That made a big difference and we saved a bunch of money on HVAC cooling over the entire summer. We saved so much money that we were able to keep paying for the HVAC maintenance. Normally, we get heating maintenance in the fall followed by an air conditioning tune-up in the spring. But we never really considered not paying for HVAC maintenance. Its’ just too important for the HVAC equipment and the HVAC equipment is just too important to us. But having the savings from the summer of less air conditioning really did help.

When we bought this house, we knew that it was really out of our league. This was true when we first walked through the place with the realtor. The asking price was about ten grand more than the top end of our budget. And honestly, the top end of our budget was stretching it already. But we were able to negotiate the price a bit because we were willing to replace the HVAC equipment ourselves. This brought the price down substantially and allowed us to spend on great residential HVAC. Still, my wife and I knew that we were sort of going to be pressed a bit to enjoy the quality heating and air of this house. The mortgage was big and it took up more of our budget that we had hoped. But we did something with the HVAC that would change that for us. The house came with a fully finished basement. There was a bathroom, shower and about 700 square feet of space. So we had the HVAC company install a ductless heat pump in the basement. With good quality heating and air in that space, we were able to rent it out as an apartment. When we first did this, we weren’t exactly sure that we would need to rent out the basement apartment. Yet, having the air conditioning down there was great for when guest visited as well. But when the pandemic hit and we both had to take pay cuts, that ductless heat pump downstairs saved our bacon. We were able to cover almost 70 percent of our mortgage with the rent from the basement apartment.

I’m from a family who did whatever they could to save money. It was just a part of how I was raised. My dad was the thriftiest person you could imagine. He weighed the vale of each dollar on every purchase he made. That doesn’t mean he necessarily always went with the cheap stuff. He for sure spent according to the value of a product first. That’s also the way he was with the HVAC and the thermostat setting. If you were thinking that you might move the HVAC setting in his house, you’d be wrong. It was saving on stuff like HVAC utility costs where he really did his thing. I realize that I too am much the same way. The area I live in is super hot in the summer and there is plenty of air conditioning to be had. Still, I make sure that we get the most from our HVAC efficiency. I do my best to make sure our house is efficiently sealed up and that we mitigate things like direct sunlight heating. We keep the thermostat setting in the low 80’s during the summer to save as well. But one area of HVAC that I just won’t cut corners on is HVAC maintenance or HVAC repair. That is for the HVAC professionals alone. They are the ones who are licensed and certified HVAC technicians so they know what they’re doing and I don’t. The quality heating and air in my place is far too important to cut corners on. Anything to do with the HVAC unit goes right through the HVAC company.

It was so easy to call it quits at the gym.

• I really didn’t like going there all that much.

So when the pandemic hit, it was easy not to renew my membership. The truth be told, I really have a hard time getting motivated to do anything but sit in the air conditioning of my living room after work. I know this is not good for me so I workout. Still, going to the gym was not my favorite sort of healthy effort. Getting out of the air conditioning for a walk or something like that was not as tough. But going into a place where the commercial HVAC equipment seems to be working overtime just to make a dent with the heat and humidity was another. I never felt comfortable in there with the thermostat setting. Yet, I think my insecurity about working out with everyone else was something that was more discomforting. But I had to have a better plan than just being done with the gym when didn’t renew my membership. I liked getting out of the air conditioning and getting outside for a walk but that wasn’t enough. So I finally did something so I wouldn’t have to get a gym membership ever again. I put in a ductless heat pump in the basement and added a home gym. Now, I have the best quality heating and air that I could ask for while working out. And I find that I’m much, much more motivated to get after a workout thanks to the great air conditioning in my own gym.
