Furnace lifespans vary but its good to know

My wifey and I have been putting off having our oil furnace updated for a few years now. The oil furnace is outdated and it technically still heats our home, however it doesn’t run efficiently. No matter what temperature we set it to, our weekly utility bills remain the same. Logically, the two of us knew that we needed to update the oil furnace because the we were spending more money to heat our apartment in the long run compared to buying a new one. When the time came to finally update the oil furnace, we spoke with the Heating and A/C company about our options. Neither of us had bought a oil furnace before and we wanted to be sure that we were purchasing something that would heat our apartment efficiently and have a long life. However based on our apartment and our heating needs, the Heating and A/C company requested a few oil furnaces. First, an electric oil furnace which would run anywhere between 20-25 years. Then there were the gas oil furnace, which would run about 15 years. Lastly, the Heating and A/C company requested a ductless mini split system, however those were reliable for ten to fifteen years. These life predictions were average and based on how well the oil furnace was cared for. Knowing these numbers helped us decide on an electric oil furnace. Our outdated oil furnace was electric and it worked wonderful for us, it was just aging. But if we got the new electric oil furnace, we wouldn’t need to update the oil furnace for another twenty years.
