The old days of HVAC repair

I love hearing the older techs talk about the early days in the industry.

The world today is vastly different from the world of the 70s and 80s.

Part of me wishes I could have experienced it. Everything in society today is so rigidly controlled, operated by computers and big corporations. Back in the early days things were a lot more wild. It was commonplace for the HVAC work crews to bring a cooler full of beer with them to the worksite. Can you imagine getting away with that today? But it used to be standard practice! These days the HVAC industry is as strictly regimented as the Domino’s pizza delivery system. HVAC techs are checked into work via their phone or iPad all through the shift, so with GPS the bosses always know where they are and what they are doing every moment of the day. Doesn’t that sound exhausting, having to account for every second of your day? The old timers were outlaws of heating and cooling repair, most of them didn’t even have a certification. The only way I can see this job becoming more fun is if I stop working for a major corporation and start working for a local HVAC contractor. Better still, I should start my own HVAC company where I can be the boss and set my own rules. I wouldn’t let my work crews drink beer on the job, either, but at least I would be a cooler boss! This is a nice dream to have, but it takes a substantial amount of cash to become an HVAC contractor
