It was colder at the top of the mountain than at the bottom.

My friends and I were going to a ski lodge for the weekend.

We thought the car was going to be okay, or we wouldn’t have left.

We were at the top of the mountain and about ten miles away from the ski lodge when the car quit working. We didn’t have any HVAC in the car without it running, and it was getting colder. It was so much colder at the top of the mountain that at the bottom that we were worried about freezing to death before help arrived. Luckily, our phones were still working, and we could call for help. In the meantime, I pulled out the portable space heater I carried with me when we headed for the ski lodge. I had been staying at the lodge one weekend when the power went out from a snowstorm. It was so cold in the cabins that everyone was congregating in the great room. The only heat in the lodge was from the large open fireplace in the middle of the room. People were sleeping on the sofas and chairs, and some stretched out on the floor, but everyone was warm because of the fireplace. Ever since, I have carried a space heater with me every time we head to the ski lodge. I plugged it in to the lighter, and we could keep the inside of the car warm until help arrived. They laughed at me when I brought my little heater along, but they were glad I had it when the car broke down. The space heater gave us enough warmth to survive our wait.
