I couldn't afford the new furnace.

When the HVAC technician arrived, I was sure he was going to tell me we needed some repairs made, and I was prepared for that.

I wasn’t prepared for him to tell me we needed a new furnace.

I knew we were having some problems with the furnace when we shut it down for the summer. I would have never guessed those problems were so bad that we were going to need to purchase a new furnace this fall. Had I known, I would have saved some money for a new furnace. Instead, we went on vacation with the kids and spent all the money we had saved. We could have put the vacation off for another year, but you can’t go without heat. If I had a fireplace, we may have been able to wait for a month or two until we had more money, but that wasn’t an option. I talked to my wife, and she simply said that we couldn’t afford the new furnace, even though she looked worried when she said it. We tried to find other sources for the money, but we had nothing. When the HVAC technician arrived that evening, we told him our concerns about not having the money and tried to talk him into just making some repairs, but he was relentless. He said repairs would not keep the furnace running. It was already twenty-five years old, and that put it at almost ten years past its lifespan. It would be best to buy the new furnace now and not have it died in the middle of a blizzard. He showed us a one-year, same as cash payment plan, and said his boss would stretch it out to two years if needed.
